Early Life & Education

Kerry Marisa Washington was born on January 31, 1977, in the Bronx, New York City. When Valerie was growing up, her mother was a professor and an educational consultant; her father, Earl, was a real estate agent. Her mother’s family links her to the late Colin Powell, the former US Secretary of State.

She went to high school in Manhattan at the Spence School, where she graduated in 1994. She was a member of the TADA! Youth Theater as a teen. She graduated from George Washington University in 1998 with a double major in anthropology and sociology.

As the commencement speaker for the 2013 graduation ceremony, she returned to her old high school. An honorary doctorate in fine arts was later conferred on her in her honor.

Actor Denzel Washington made his cinematic debut in ABC’s telefilm “Magical Makeover” (1994). Her next roles were in “Our Song” (2000), “Save the Last Dance” (2001), “Bad Company” (2002), and “The Human Stain” (2003.) (2003). When she first appeared in Spike Lee’s 2004 film “She Hate Me,” she received a lot of positive feedback. In the years that followed, she appeared in a number of films, including “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Little Man,” “The Fantastic Four,” “The Last King of Scotland,” and “I Think I Love My Wife” (2007).

The ABC drama series “Scandal” portrayed Washington as crisis management expert Olivia Pope from 2012 to 2018, making it one of her best-known performances. Actor and director Rick Famuyiwa helmed the 2016 HBO film “Confirmation,” in which Washington appeared. Anita Hill’s testimony during Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court nomination is the subject of this film. “Little Fires Everywhere” is a Hulu original series that stars Washington and Reese Witherspoon and is executive produced by the former First Lady. A novel by Celeste Ng served as the inspiration for the show.

Personal Life

Washington was engaged to actor David Moscow from October 2004 to March 2007. On June 24, 2013, she married NFL cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. They have a daughter and a son together.
