In the Bronx, New York, on March 26, 1940, James Edmund Caan was born. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Germany named Sophie and Arthur, and Arthur was a butcher. With his sister Barbara and brother Ronnie, James grew up in Queens. He later attended Hofstra University in New York as well as Michigan State University, where he studied economics and played football. While attending Hofstra, Caan developed an interest in acting and made the decision to go to the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. A significant portion of the actor’s $20 million net worth comes from the annual royalties he receives for his prior performances. When he and his ex-wife Linda Stokes were going through a divorce in 2016, the amount of royalties became public. According to court records, the actor received over $1 million in royalties from his prior performances in 2015. He received $140,000 in royalties from his part in Elf alone, a movie that had been released 13 years prior to the divorce.

As the actor intended to retire but had to take on small roles in movies to pay for alimony and child support, the divorce turned contentious and he blamed his wife of hurting his career. James made money from real estate in addition to royalties. According to the Los Angeles Times, the actor and his then-wife Linda purchased a $2.25 million home in 2003. When they divorced in 2015, they sold the home. James Caan struggled with depression and anger management in the early to mid-1980s. He ran into some legal problems and also lost his sister to leukaemia. Due to financial issues brought on by the theft of his possessions, he returned to acting in 1987.
