Early Life
James Edward Burrows was born December 30, 1940 in Los Angeles, California. His father Abe was a successful director, author and composer. As a child James and the family moved to New York City for Abe’s work.
James attended New York’s High School of Music and Art then Oberlin College followed by the Yale School of Drama.
After gradating from Yale, Jim returned to Los Angeles where he got a job as a dialogue coach on one of his father’s shows. He also worked for a time on the short-lived stage adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Cheers
While working at MTM Enterprises, James met his brothers Glen and Les Charles. Brother Charles eventually hired Jimmy to oversee episode 76 of the taxi they produced.
In 1982, Glen, Les and James worked together to create the show Cheers. This show has become one of the most popular and successful shows to date. James directed 237 episodes of 275 episodes in the series.
Another success In the 90’s, there was an even longer stream of directing hit television comedies such as Frazier, Friends, Third Rock From The Sun, Dharma & Greg, and Will & Grace.
Between 2000 and 2010, he oversaw two and a half men, Big Bang Theory, Mike & Molly, two Broke Girls, and friends who lived better.
Burroughs also made cameo appearances in several shows he managed. He was nominated for 15 Directors Guild of America Awards and one Emmy Award each year between 1980 and 2005, excluding 1997. To date, he has won 10 Emmy Awards.

Jim Burrows has been married to his former hairdresser Debbie Easton for many years. He was previously married to Linda Solomon. Because of these relationships, he has three daughters and one stepdaughter.
Investments and Real Estate
Property In 2015, James and Debbie paid $ 4.2 million for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City. They put the apartment up for sale in 2017 for $ 6.75 million. They previously owned a 250-acre farm in Millbrook, NY and sold it for $ 15 million in 2011.
In recent years, their main residence has been a 13,000-square-foot palace-like mansion in the Bel Air district of Los Angeles, purchased in 2004 for $ 11.94 million. The 4.5-acre site features a guest house, tennis courts and a swimming pool, as well as a 6-bedroom main house.
