Hart was born in July 1957 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was the seventh child of Stu and Helen Hart.  His maternal grandmother is of Greek origin, while his maternal grandfather is of Irish ancestry. Hart had eleven siblings: four sisters, Ellie, Georgia, Alison, and Diana, and seven brothers, Smith, Bruce, Keith, Wayne, Dean, Ross, and Owen.

Bret Hart began amateur wrestling at the age of nine, training with his father and brothers in the dungeon for countless hours. He joined the Ernest Manning High School wrestling team in 1974 and won the Calgary municipal championship. Later, he received a college degree in filmmaking from nearby Mount Royal College (now Mount Royal University).

Bret Hart began his career in 1976 as a referee for Stampede Wrestling. His father, Stu Hart, ran the promotion.

He made his ring debut in 1978 and was an instant success after joining the WWF the following decade. He had a number of notable events with the firm, including the famed “Montreal Screwjob,” and was also awarded gold.

From the 1970s to the 2010s, Hart won 32 matches: 17 in the WWF/WWE and 17 in the WCW.

In August 1991, he defeated Mr. Perfect to win the Intercontinental Championship, and at WrestleMania VIII, he held the championship for the second time. Hart has held the title of WWF Champion on five separate occasions, for a total of 654 days. He is also the first Canadian-born WCW Heavyweight Champion. Hart won his first WWE Championship in Canada by submitting Ric Flair with a finisher. The Hart Foundation also won the World Tag Team Titles twice.

Har was one of seven individuals honored twice in the WWE Hall of Fame.
