Braintree Town Council clears way for marijuana business

The Braintree City Council has approved a zoning change that paves the way for minority-owned marijuana businesses to apply for permits to open growing and processing facilities with delivery services.

The council voted 6 to 3 on August 2 to change the zoning to allow non-retail marijuana in the business and commercial districts of the city’s highways, including Long Ivory Street near Braintree MBTA Station. allowed to do business.  Flower Express CEO Drew Ledbetter said his company plans to open a marijuana facility on the premises.

This long-empty warehouse on Ivory Street next to the Braintree MBTA station will soon be home to Flower Xpress, a marijuana cultivation and processing facility.

By a margin of 6 to 3, the minimum number of votes required for enforcement, the City Council approved a zoning change permitting non-retail marijuana operations in the city’s highway business zones. The zoning changes are now under the approval of Mayor Charles Kokoros.

Construction of the Ivory Street facility is subject to site plan approval by the City Zoning Board and OK from the State Cannabis Control Board. The Planning Commission approved the regional change.

Proponents of zoning say the city needs the tax revenue the facility will bring, which Ledbetter estimates is up to $6 million a year.
