Around the World in 80 Days Season 1 Review

Around the World in 80 Days Season 2

The core plot of this adaptation of the story is the same as it was in the original: Phileas Fogg places a wager and sets out to travel around the world in under eighty days.

But there is a lot more social and political criticism, and the tone is much darker and more somber.

A female journalist named Abigail joins Fogg on his adventures. While Fogg and Passepartout, his French butler, travel around the globe, she keeps tabs on their whereabouts.

With the intention of arriving back in London by Christmas Eve, the three of them embark on a global tour.

In different parts of the world, only Bellamy (one of the club’s gentlemen) tries to stop him.

This is a visually lovely show with superb location work, albeit some questionable storyline. The actor that plays Fogg, David Tennant, does a fantastic job of transferring his charm into his character.

One may argue that the show wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining without him.

Around the World in Eighty Days is successful in the end.

It’s a fresh take on the old story that still lets viewers follow along with Fogg and company on their journey while making just enough textual modifications to make it seem new.

While some of the chapters, like the fifth episode where the three characters are shipwrecked on a desert island, stand out as particularly memorable, others, like Bellamy’s weak threat, feel slapped on and don’t add much to the narrative.

Try watching Around the World in 80 Days if you need some entertainment. Although there is action in this, it is forgettable enough that you won’t miss it when your normal TV schedule starts.
