Alfonso Ribeiro was born in New York City on September 21, 1971. His parents are of Trinidadian and Tobaggian heritage. He was born in the Riverdale neighborhood. His paternal grandfather was Albert Ribeiro, the Trinidadian calypsonian known as “Lord Hummingbird.” Alfonso began working in the entertainment industry at the age of eight.

In the mid-1990s, he attended “Hollywood Professional School” before enrolling at “Cal State University” to receive a degree in Theater Arts. He began his acting career as a child long before then.

Professional Life

Ribeiro’s first significant childhood role was in the Broadway show The Tap Dance Kid, for which he received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. In 1984, Ribeiro performed in a Pepsi commercial as a dancer alongside Michael Jackson.

In the television series “Silver Spoons,” he was cast as Rick Schroder’s best friend later that year. In 1985, he appeared on MTV as himself to promote his dance instruction book, “Alfonso’s Breakin’ & Poppin’ Book.” Ribeiro released “Timebomb,” a 12-inch rap single, on Prism Records in 1986.

From September 1990 through May 1996, Ribeiro played Carlton Banks, the cousin of Will Smith’s primary character, on the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. “The Carlton” is a dance routine made popular by Carlton’s repeated performances of Tom Jones’ “It’s Not Unusual.”

 Ribeiro has hosted several television shows, including Catch 21, GSN Live, Big Time Rush, Spell-Mageddon, and I’m a Celebrity. Things We Do For Love, America’s Funniest Home Videos, and Shake It Up and Get Me Out of Here!

In addition to being an actor and TV host, he is a wonderful dancer, singer, voice actor, and director. At the age of eight, he began his acting career on the Broadway theatre platform. Ribeiro and Robin Stapler were married from January 2002 to August 2006. Sienna was born to the former couple in 2006, but after their separation the following year, he married Angela in 2012.

Ribeiro wed Angela Unkrich on October 13, 2012, after a three-month relationship. The couple has three children born in 2013, 2015, and 2019 and resides in Los Angeles.
